Bridgeport Schools Audit: No Fraud Found, But Serious Fixes Needed

The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has released the results of a forensic audit into Bridgeport Public Schools—and while no fraud or theft was found, the report revealed serious problems in how the district manages its money.

Why Was There an Audit?

Bridgeport faced a projected $39 million budget shortfall, raising concerns about financial mismanagement. In response, an independent firm, CliftonLarsonAllen LLP (CLA), was hired to dig deep into the district’s finances for 2024 and 2025.

What the Audit Found

  • No stolen money, but plenty of missteps
  • The school board lacked key information and oversight
  • Funds were shifted around in ways that hid budget problems
  • Expenses were misclassified, causing confusion
  • Departments were left out of planning and lacked training

Why It Matters

Over 70% of Bridgeport students come from low-income households, making it essential that school funds are handled carefully. Poor financial systems hurt the students who need support the most.
Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker called this a chance to “reset” and rebuild trust through better transparency and oversight.

What’s Next?

The audit made 34 recommendations, including:

  • Improving communication and training
  • Strengthening board oversight
  • Increasing budget transparency

State officials and financial experts will support Bridgeport in making these changes.
